Fiasco in Spanish means “failure.” This was the pseudonym chosen by this artist because many people told him not to when he said he wanted to become an artist; they said that he would starve to death. Fortunately, this did not happen and Fiasco became a very important artist in the art scene of Lima.
Fiasco Vision
Fiasco is one of the representative artists who particularly impressed me in Lima. As a street artist and visionary illustrator, his artworks are inspired by the history of Peru. They have something mysterious behind their style. The paintings are reminiscent of ancient rituals made by “chamanes,” the shamans or Inca divinities such as Viracocha. This God was considered the creator of everything in nature and is characterized by two staffs. He was also believed to have created the sun and moon on Lake Titicaca. While Fiasco’s art reminds us of these ancient rituals, he often paints them in a modern view.
Fiasco’s art is impressive, rich in details: shadows, bright colors, geometries and elements of the Inca’s Empire delineated by skinny spray caps and lines.
Q&A Interview with Fiasco
What is revealed behind the meanings of FIASCO? And what else should we know about your background?
The word FIASCO means “failure” because many people thought that would be the fate of my art here in Perú, but fortunately, I believe in myself and this didn’t happen.
This is a pun regarding my process to learn and develop my own techniques. I like to graph themes of Peruvian culture and adapt them to my style and make them more modern. I enjoy making textures, patterns and focusing on the stroke.
How long have you been making art, and when did you start to paint on the streets?
I have always drawn, but I had my first commissioned artwork when I was 27, cause it’s difficult to have a chance to work without any study or experience here in Peru, anyway I started to paint on the street 5 years ago.
Where else have you painted? Where do you want to take your art?
I’ve painted only in Lima at the moment. I’ve participated in a collective exhibition in Paris; I would like to expose my work in Europe, USA, Asia to allow people to know my culture through my eyes.
Have you ever participated in any Street Art Festival?
Yes, here in Lima: Meeting of styles Lima, Next level, Puro Muro, I also painted in Callao Monumental.
Why are you painting?
I paint because it’s what I like to do. I would like to go as far as I can to show my children that with perseverance, work, and effort, you can achieve what you want.
What are your plans for the future?
I have many projects for the future. I’m working on a book with my graphics, and I’ll create a clothed brand. I would like to learn how to make art toys of my characters and prepare an expo to present in a recognized gallery abroad.
